Nestled in one of those postcard-perfect towns along Lake Como, this kitchen renovation was more than just another project—it was personal. Having called four continents home, this apartment is our casa vacanze (aka holiday retreat) and a beautiful reflection of our journey.
Every home I’ve designed has been like a mini creative lab, a space to experiment, refine, and let my design style evolve. This Lake Como kitchen is no exception. It blends timeless design, clever functionality, and a nod to sustainability—a trifecta I love bringing to life.
The original kitchen? Let’s just say it served its purpose but lacked soul. Think functional but bland, with a coastal vibe that didn’t quite match the elegance of the apartment or its breathtaking location. The layout was optimal, but the aesthetic and custom requirements needed a major glow-up.
Opening up the space
First, we removed the door and added decorative mouldings, transforming the kitchen into an airy, seamless walk-through. Now, sunlight streams through tall French-style windows, and the ventilation is so good, I was able to raise the range hood above the usual height. Paired with a high, full-perimeter backsplash, the design feels open and breezy, with none of that hemmed-in vibe kitchens sometimes have.
A centrepiece with history
The antique kitchen island and stool? Those are the showstoppers. Sourced locally, it’s these kind of pieces that tells a story just by being there. I always say every space needs at least one item older than you—it adds instant warmth and character. Topped with the same durable porcelain as the countertops, it ties the whole room together while standing up to the wear and tear of daily life.
The comfort of custom countertops
Let’s talk countertops for a sec. As a tall family, we’re no strangers to backaches from standard counter heights. So, I raised them by two inches, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. It’s one of those small tweaks that makes everyday tasks—like cooking or doing the dishes—so much more comfortable.
Solid brass brackets now hold open shelving, which is both practical and pretty—because why shouldn’t storage double as décor?
Artisan details that shine
From six handcrafted artisan lights to the solid brass hardware, every detail in this kitchen was thoughtfully chosen to honour local craftsmanship. Even the practical touches, like Italy’s ingenious four-part recycling drawer system and the workhorse Blanco sink, were picked with longevity and sustainability in mind.
This kitchen isn’t just a place to cook; it’s a place to gather, to savour, and to appreciate the art of design in every detail.
